The Crafty Maven Getaway: 2017

A few weeks ago I was up on The Crafty Maven Getaway for Scraplift Saturday. For my assignment I decided to scraplift a layout by Paige Evans, which I thought would work well when converted to a 9×12 layout. I decided to create a cover for my 2017 Project Life album, since I thought the large hand cut letters from Paige’s layout would work really well for my numbers.

This was the inspiration piece we were working with. It has bright pops of citrus colours, as well as contrasting black and white. This isn’t the colour palette I’d be drawn to naturally myself, so I embrace the challenge of stepping out of my ”colour comfort zone’.

I normally use my Felicity Jane kits for my Project Life, but the kits tend to learn towards softer shades, so I delved in to my stash instead to rustle up some goodies.

I knew right away that I wanted to do a mixed media background. In converting the layout to 9×12, I was left with a lot of unused white space. The ‘packaging technique’ is a great way to help fill that space in. I used three colours of mists for my background – Dylusions Fresh Lime, Colour Shine’s Butter (which also added some lovely shimmer) and Distress Mist in Cracked Pistachio. I added the latter to bring a slightly softer shade on green on to my layout, so it didn’t stand out as much when put in the album with my other softer toned layouts.

I also added some modelling paste to the page, using one of Amy Tangerine’s stencils. Triangles are meant to be quite ‘in’ this year, so I thought that was a good one to use!

For the numbers I looked to my 6×6 paper pads. I always forget to use them, so it was good to dust them off! The yellow paper was from Echo Park’s Capture Life collection, and the others were all from Amy Tangerine’s Plus One – The colours matched the mood board perfectly! I also added some Heidi Swapp puffy glitter alphas to finish my title off.

When it came to embellishing the page I kept things fairly light. I added an enamel geotag, as that element also featured on Paige’s layout, as well as some puffy stickers from Pinkfresh Studio’s Felicity collection.

The Crafty Maven Getaway: The Long Read

Yesterday I was up on The Crafty Maven Getaway for Sketch it Out Thursday.

I decided to use this sketch by Laura Whitaker (Pinterest link), which I thought would work well when converted to a 9×12 layout.

This was the inspiration piece we were working with this week. As I normally do, I decided to bring the colours in to my layout. I was also drawn to the photo of the clock, which is actually what gave me the idea for my layout.

The August Felicity Jane “Maggie” kit was perfect for this layout as it had the orange tones from the mood board, but in a lighter shade. As someone who doesn’t like to scrap with dark colours this was a great fit.

My layout focused on how long it was taking me to read this gorgeous illustrated copy of  Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, it’s been nine months and I still haven’t finished it! I love reading ‘real’ books, but man, my kindle is just so much easier!

I kept things quite light, and added some tulle for interest, while not overpowering the layout. I love how it looks, though wish my attempts to sew through it had worked! I tried on two machines and both of them jammed after a few stitches for some reason.
